The Spanish Heart Foundation is clear about the essential aspects of cardiovascular care. Heart attacks, strokes and strokes are among the diseases that kill more people every year. The most curious thing is that the 10 most important risk factors are easy to reduce by adapting some habits of life. These show us that to live longer and better we just have to make some small changes. Changes that are in our hands, of course.

Smoking

Tobacco is directly related to the chances of suffering cardiovascular problems. This is produced by several mechanisms: first, it activates the sympathetic nervous system in a way that potentiates the effects related to cardiovascular disease. On the other hand, it also accelerates the appearance of atherosclerotic plaques and arteriosclerosis.
It is estimated that smokers have three times more risk of cardiovascular disease than someone who does not smoke. But, in addition, non-smokers are also affected by the smokers’ fault, so that smoking increases the risk for the entire population and in all senses.

And not only in terms of our cardiovascular health, tobacco affects us in multiple ways. We know that quitting smoking is not easy. Facing anxiety is very complicated. No remedy (however good or rare) is infallible and there are no miracles. However, changes in habits help us keep our priorities in place.

Stress and anxiety

Both stress and anxiety are factors related to each other and to heart disease. The studies point out that the stress generated by situations that pose a challenge, especially in emotional and work issues, can pose a risk to our cardiovascular health. With uncontrolled anxiety, exactly the same thing happens. It is important to maintain control of the situations that generate this type of emotions.
While stress, in itself, can be reduced by taking appropriate decisions, exercising and acquiring healthy lifestyle habits (curiously, this also helps reduce other risk factors), anxiety is a difficulty that we face all human beings.
However, experts believe that anxiety does not have to become a problem (as long as it does not reach a pathological level). If we know how to control it and, above all, coexist with it, it does not have to be any inconvenience (nor a risk factor)
Cholesterol

For some time now, the role of cholesterol in our organism has ceased to be demonized. Even so, we should not stop worrying about their levels and how these affect us, especially in relation to our cardiovascular health. In short, badly named “bad” cholesterol can clog the walls of blood vessels and arteries, forming plaques of atheroma.
Uncontrolled cholesterol levels are associated with an increased risk of cardiorespiratory problems. Again, and luckily, a good diet, rich in vegetables and fibers, fish with healthy fats, nuts … will help us reduce excessive levels and keep levels at bay. On the other hand, exercise and physical activity are effective measures to keep our cholesterol in place.
The hypertension

Very associated to the previous problem, hypertension is a major cause of cardiovascular problems. Hypertension, as a disease, can appear at any age, but especially after 40 years. It is produced by a very high blood pressure, due to various issues.
For example, we know that tobacco, excess fats, sugars, salt and sedentary lifestyle help to increase hypertension. What can we do to reduce it? Adequate nutrition, reduction of salt, sugar and fat and some sports are enough to maintain adequate blood pressure.
The obesity

Overweight and obesity are considered the most widespread epidemics in the world. This is also very related to all of the above. Obesity is a very serious dilemma that greatly increases the risk of suffering a heart problem.
